Every Great Artist Starts Somewhere
At NextGen Art League, we believe every child is creative. Sometimes all they need is a little guidance, a little encouragement, and a chance to learn from the artists who changed the world.
Our Creative Journey isn't about making perfect paintings. It's about learning to see like an artist, think like an artist, and eventually create like one.
Month by month, children build confidence, discover new techniques, and develop skills that will stay with them long after the paint has dried.
Our Teaching Philosophy
The greatest artists in history didn't wake up one day with their own unique style. They learned from the Masters who came before them.
That's exactly how we teach.
Each month we dive into the work of one remarkable artist. Together, we'll explore their life, discover what inspired them, and study the techniques that made their artwork unforgettable.
Rather than simply talking about art, we'll experience it.
Students begin by recreating several of the artist's most famous paintings. As they paint, they'll discover the artist's thought process, brushwork, color choices, composition, and creative techniques.
Only after they understand those techniques do they begin creating artwork of their own.
It's a process of learning, practicing, and then creating—just as artists have done for generations.
How Each Month Works
Meet the Master
Every month begins with a beautifully designed mini magazine introducing one of history's greatest artists. Through fun facts, stories, and beautiful artwork, children discover the person behind the paintings.
Study the Masterpieces
Together we'll recreate two or more of the artist's iconic works while learning the techniques that made them famous.
We'll ask questions like:
• Why did Van Gogh paint with energetic brushstrokes?
• How did Monet capture light?
• Why did Seurat use tiny dots of color?
Every painting becomes a lesson in seeing the world through another artist's eyes.
Learn the Techniques
As children paint, they'll naturally develop important artistic skills including:
• Drawing
• Composition
• Color Theory
• Brush Control
• Perspective
• Texture
• Light & Shadow
• Observation
• Creative Thinking
Become the Artist
Now comes the exciting part.
Once students understand the techniques, it's time to put them into practice.
Instead of painting another sunflower, they choose a subject that inspires them.
Maybe it's their dog.
A dragon.
A lighthouse.
A favorite flower.
A race car.
Whatever they choose, they'll use the techniques they've learned to create an original artwork inspired by the featured artist's style.
This is where learning becomes creativity.
While every month brings a new Master Artist and creative adventure, here’s a glimpse of what your child will experience during their first three months in the League.
Month 1
Vincent van Gogh
Expressive Brushstrokes & Bold Color
Students explore Van Gogh’s energetic style by recreating works like Sunflowers and Cypress Trees. Along the way, they learn how bold color and expressive brushstrokes can bring emotion to life—before creating their own Van Gogh-inspired masterpiece.
Month 2
Claude Monet
Painting Light & Atmosphere
In this month, young artists discover how Monet captured light, reflections, and changing seasons. Through soft color blending and layered brushwork, they begin to see how atmosphere can transform a painting.
Month 3
Paul Cézanne
Building Beautiful Landscapes
Students learn how Cézanne built landscapes using simple shapes and thoughtful composition. By breaking scenes into forms and structure, they gain confidence in creating balanced, dimensional artwork of their own.
And this is just the beginning.
Each new month introduces another inspiring artist, new techniques to explore, and fresh opportunities for children to grow in confidence, creativity, and skill.
A Peek Inside the Journey
The Artist's Choice Challenge
This is where the magic happens.
After studying the featured artist and recreating several of their masterpieces, children are invited to become the artist.
Instead of being told what to paint, they decide.
Maybe they paint a horse using Van Gogh's brushstrokes.
A castle in Monet's soft colors.
A family portrait inspired by Modigliani.
Or a favorite pet using Seurat's pointillism.
There are no wrong answers.
Every child creates something uniquely their own while applying the techniques they've learned throughout the month.
Because the goal isn't to create another Van Gogh.
The goal is to become the first version of themselves.
Badges & Certificates
Every completed adventure brings new accomplishments.
Members earn collectible badges, printable certificates, and creative milestones that celebrate both effort and growth.
Learning should feel rewarding, and every artist deserves to celebrate their progress.
A Note from Sheila
"One of the greatest compliments I ever received as an art teacher didn't happen in my classroom—it happened at Michael's."
One afternoon, a parent called me from the middle of the store and asked if I had an opening in my Montessori art class.
Curious, I asked her how she heard of me.
She told me she had been shopping when she overheard a little preschool boy—one of my four-year-old students—pointing excitedly at the framed art prints on the wall.
"Mom! That's a Cézanne! That's a Van Gogh! That's a Monet!"
She couldn't believe a four-year-old recognized the world's great artists so confidently. She walked over, asked where he learned that, and called me right there from the aisle.
That moment has stayed with me ever since.
It wasn't because a four-year-old recognized a Van Gogh.
It was because he recognized that he belonged in the conversation.
He wasn't shy or uncertain. He pointed to those paintings with confidence, knowing exactly what he was looking at. His mom listened. Another parent listened. His knowledge mattered, and people respected what he had to say.
That's what I want for every child.
Yes, I want them to learn to paint beautiful artwork. But even more than that, I want them to walk through a museum, visit an art gallery, or stroll past a painting in a coffee shop and say, "I know that artist!"
I want them to understand why Van Gogh painted with swirling brushstrokes, how Monet captured light, and what made Cézanne see the landscape differently.
When children understand art, they begin to see themselves differently, too. They gain confidence, they become curious, and they discover that they have something meaningful to contribute.
That's the heart of NextGen Art League.
What's Coming Next
The Creative Journey doesn't end after one year.
As young artists grow in confidence, they'll revisit some of their favorite Masters while exploring new artists, more advanced techniques, exciting creative challenges, and fresh artistic adventures.
Because creativity is a lifelong journey.
And every masterpiece begins with a single brushstroke.
